When it comes to building a small business website, many companies choose to go the DIY route. With a variety of options such as Squarespace, Wix, Weebly and others readily available these days, this might sound like a natural first step. After all, they offer simple solutions for users with little to no skill in web design to have a fully working site up within days. But it's not as easy as it sounds.
Many of our clients are actually those users. Ones who have started a project on a DIY site, only to run into trouble and frustration with hours and hours wasted. We're often asked to simply go in and clean up these sites, restructure them and make them user friendly. It's one thing to simply mess around and drag some boxes into place to make something basic. But if you're really serious about your business, you still need a professional designer. Someone who knows which fonts, pictures, colors and spacing work best for your company's look. Unless you have a great eye for design, you're likely to create something that doesn't look as professional as your competition.
And then there's the cost of time spent. For most DIY customers, the amount of time spent learning on YouTube, playing with the program, reading articles and researching is simply not worth it. They end up frustrated having spent days and sometimes weeks creating something that doesn't work flawlessly, often with broken links and content that looks cut off on different screens.
At the end of the day, the cost of professionally creating a beautiful, fully functioning website, which will bring you more business is not much, especially considering the amount of time and money lost on a DIY project. So if you're serious about the development of your business, consider hiring a professional.
